Two letters written by William Smith Bloom of Monroe, Wisconsin: one in 1865 from Raleigh, North Carolina, describing the jubilation and celebration at Lee's surrender; the other in 1875 containing family news. Also included are an 1881 recipe for liniment as prescribed by an Indian medicine man, and a 1963 letter from the donor, Robert Willaman, providing biographical information on his Uncle William and his grandfather, J. S. Bloom.
